Freelander / Evoque
How Land Rover entered the compact SUV market — and found some of its biggest sales successes there.
The Freelander (1997) was Land Rover's first compact SUV, aimed at buyers who wanted the brand's image and some off-road ability without a full-size vehicle. A second generation, Freelander 2, followed in 2006.
The Range Rover Evoque (2011) replaced the Freelander line and repositioned it firmly under the Range Rover name — a smaller, style-led model (developed with design input publicly associated with Victoria Beckham on a special edition) that became one of Land Rover's best-selling models globally.
The Range Rover Velar joined in 2017, slotting in size and price between the Evoque and the Range Rover Sport, and leaning further into design-led minimalism than any Range Rover before it.
